Discover Stonehill’s transformative Learning Inside Out Network (LION), an unparalleled opportunity designed to comprehensively elevate students’ academic and professional competencies. Developed and led by esteemed Stonehill faculty, this unique program spans two semesters, seamlessly integrating traditional classroom instruction, overseas internships, and participation in a globally renowned international security conference, empowering students to become adept experts capable of presenting comprehensive research on a global platform.

The LION journey typically commences with a fall semester course in Political Science, Criminology, or Economics. Additionally, we are excited to introduce a newly inaugurated summer option, currently open for applications.

Upon acceptance, students collaborate with the program’s three dedicated advisors: Professor Anna Ohanyan (Political Science and International Studies), Professor Anamika Twyman-Ghoshal (Sociology and Criminology), and Professor Piyush Chandra (Economics). Together, they assist accepted students in identifying internship opportunities from LION’s extensive network of providers in Armenia or Serbia, tailored to align with students’ coursework.

The Genesis of LION:

Professor Peter Ubertaccio, Director of the Martin Institute for Law & Society, recognized a crucial gap in traditional international programs. While they offer valuable cultural and academic experiences, they often lack alignment with students’ ongoing coursework. Seeking to bridge this divide, Ubertaccio approached Professor Ohanyan, whose extensive fieldwork and research in the Western Balkans and South Caucasus highlighted the importance of integrating classroom theory with practical experience. Alongside Professor Twyman-Ghoshal, they envisioned and implemented a program that seamlessly marries coursework with overseas internships, enriching students’ educational journeys and preparing them for future academic pursuits or careers.

Ohanyan and Twyman-Ghoshal collaborated closely to establish partnerships with organizations in Armenia and Serbia, curate internship opportunities, arrange student housing, and identify coursework that directly complements future internships. Their concerted efforts were aimed at crafting a program that not only enhances students’ academic prowess but also fosters their long-term success, whether in advanced academic studies or professional endeavours.

“Providing students with firsthand experience in developing countries and research opportunities significantly enhances their competitiveness for graduate schools,” notes Professor Ohanyan. “Many students are unaware of the transformative potential of study abroad experiences in this regard. Thus, we designed LION to provide students with these invaluable experiences alongside practical exposure to industry professionals.”

After the program, partners organize an International Conference, hosted in June at Eurasia International University. Here, LION students showcase their research findings. Additionally, upper-level undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to participate, enriching the conference with diverse perspectives and insights.
